The Blue Zones Project at Trunk Trainers

It was a busy month for us at Trunk Trainers! We are so proud to announce that we are the latest official Blue Zones Project Participating Organization in the state of Hawaii!

What is the Blue Zones Project? It's a world-wide movement created and lead by National Geographic fellow Dan Buettner that began over 20 years ago. It examines the habits and environments of centenarians found in high concentrations in certain regions of the world. These areas were dubbed Blue Zones after the map Dan was tracking 100 plus year olds on with a blue pen became saturated with blue ink in some areas. The Project strives to replicate patterns from those areas to create a place where living longer while enjoying good health happens naturally.

Buettner found there were similarities in the behaviors of the centenarians in the Blue Zones of Okinawa, Japan, Ikaria, Greece, Sardinia, Spain, Nicoya, Costa Rica and Loma Linda, California, like moving naturally, connecting with others, having a purpose and eating mostly plants. He labeled these common principles the Power 9 and created a checklist to follow to incorporate these behaviors into daily life. The idea is that everyday communities can adopt these habits on a day to day basis to reduce disease and extend health span.

We decided in September we would like to support the Blue Zones Project and become a certified community. We already believe in all that the Blue Zones has discovered, and the Power 9 align completely with our mission of inspiring world fitness, one family at a time in a natural and sustainable way. With the certification deadline looming just a few weeks away for a 2023 credential, we went all in with a launch of our program that has laid out the bones out for our commitment to the project.

We called our kickstart the Blue Zones Bones for teh month of October and hosted a variety of activities that brought our community together, while getting us moving and connecting with our natural environment.

Some of the highlights were starting a hiking moai, planting a community garden and volunteering for the Ironman World Championship here in our local community of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.

And this is just the beginning. Look for more opportunities to join us for Blue Zones events where we can come together to move naturally, downshift, find community and live our purpose one day at a time.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this possible! To learn how you can be more Blue check out the Purpose Pledge and make a commitment to take small steps towards living to 100 yourself!

Until next time, stay Elefit and a hui ho!
